Specific Learning Difficulties 101 • Not just Dyslexia: umbrella term to describe other conditions under this category such as Dyspraxia and ADHD (sometimes includes Aspergers) • Often described as neuro-diverse conditions as individuals often have more than one at a time Overlapping areas often relate to (this is not exhaustive): • Text processing (not just poor spelling/handwriting) • Understanding spoken language • Speed of processing information (visual/written/spoken) • Memory for facts/information-hence problems in exams • Poor time management

Academic Support Workers (ASW’s) Note taking support • Accompany students to lectures and other taught classes and take notes on their behalf. • Take notes for students without making themselves known to that student or the rest of the class (discrete note taking). Library support • Assisting with their library research activities, including photocopying, searching the library catalogues and databases and locating, retrieving and carrying materials.  Mobility Assistance • Accompanying students to classes, and providing practical assistance and mobility support around the campus. Reader support • Reading academic material (e.g. text books, journals, exam papers, and class handouts) out loud to students and recording readings onto tape or mini-disc if required. Field trips •  An ASW can be provided (depending upon requirements/availability) to accompany students on field trips to fulfil their need for an ASW offsite.

  5. Academic Mentors The primary focus of Academic Mentoring includes: •  Time management •  Confidence and motivation building  •  Promotion of organisational skills; developing and maintaining filing systems, essay planning and prioritising workload •  Identifying appropriate sources of support • Supporting students in their transition to University by helping them to develop skills such as proofreading and reading and research techniques •  Assisting students to liaise with academic staff and other services within the University.

Study Skills Tutors Specialist Study Skills Tutors can help the student to develop skills relating to: •  Time management and organisation •  Note taking •  Reading academic text •  Essay writing; how to write clearly and structure your work •  Report writing •  Presentations •  Harvard referencing •  Grammar and spelling •  Revision and exam technique •  Proofreading strategies

Assistive Technology The Assistive Technology (AT) areas provide specialist software and equipment for students with learning difficulties, physical conditions, mental health conditions and sensory impairments. Location • Room A013 at the back of the Andrews IT Centre in the main Michael Andrews building  • Room ML206 on the second floor of the Mountbatten Library plus 3 PCs with assistive software on tables in the open area on this floor. • In selected areas of the IT Resource Centre in the Sir James Matthews building Software • Texthelp Read & Write 9 GOLD – Screen reading software for research & composition. • Inspiration 8 - Mind-mapping software to visually organise, outline and plan reports & presentations • Lunar - Magnification software for students with visual impairments • Zoomtext - on 1 PC in room ML206 Combined magnifier and screen reader   • Plus access to:  Scanners (including A3 model), CCTV magnifier, Height adjustable tables, Printers, Trackball mouse (x2), Portable magnifier.
