  6. WHEN TO APPLY UT Austin deadline: in the office by December 1; test scores by Dec 31 A & Min office deadline December 1 UH: Priority Dec 1; Final April 1 (Scholarship deadlines begin December 1) Most Texas public colleges have deadlines in March through July

  7. HOW TO APPLY Send in Application, SAT/ACT, transcript and recommendations as needed in any order Don’t wait for test scores Texas state colleges: www.applytexas.org (and many Texas private colleges)

  8. TO DO LIST • Select schools ($30 – 60 application fee) • Take a second SAT/ACT now if needed • Send transcripts on Naviance New rank out mid-October • Request recommendations if needed

  9. Student Assistance Students on the free or reduced lunch program can get fee waivers for SAT/ACT tests, college application fees from the College Corner. Student assistance is available from Lamar for senior dues, graduation cap & gown and dual credit book fees. See Ms. Southwell in the main office.

  10. Public Colleges Outside Texas Many have Rolling Admission deadlines Your best chance for admission is to send in your application as early as possible ..…despite the late deadline

  14. SCHOLARSHIPS Over 90% of the money students receive for college comes from the school they attend College scholarship deadlines may be earlier than for admission. They may require acceptance earlier than deadline date Your application deadline is the scholarship deadline

Based ONLY on family income: • University of Houston Cougar Promise Family income less than $45,000 No transfers / Pell Grant eligible Accepted and have financial aid complete by 3/15 • Texas A & M University Aggie Assurance Program Families earning less than $65,000 Accepted and have financial aid completed by 3/15

  20. HOUSING Most colleges require freshman to live on campus Research shows that’s a good idea Each college may have very different application timetables

  21. ADMISSION TESTING Take SAT / ACT twice if needed Choose the test that suits your strengths Complete testing in time to meet the application deadline

  22. TRANSCRIPTS ON NAVIANCE • Username: HISD student ID • Password: 8 digit date of birth in MMDDYYYY format with no slashes or dashes • Email nalderet@houstonisd.org for parent code. In Subject Line: Naviance code. Include name and grade

  23. TRANSCRIPTS • Lamar does not mail transcripts. • On Naviance, a stamp or computer picture by the school name indicates how to get transcripts to colleges

Orange Stamp Picture An Orange Stampsymbol means you have to pick up the transcript in the Registrar’s Office and mail it yourself “SENT” in Naviance means the transcript is ready to pick up Mail only schools: UT Austin, UTSA, Texas A & M College Station, TSU, Prairie View A & M, all scholarship programs

  25. A Blank Computer Picture Transcript will be sent electronically when ordered through Naviance We send transcripts electronically to: UH, Texas State, Texas Tech, Lamar University, Univ of North Texas, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin

  26. When the October rank is out mid month, transcripts with the July rank will no longer be available. If October is better, send it too Top 10% or 8% for UT = SEND NOW TRANSCRIPTS

  27. ESSAYS Your best opportunity to make paper become a person Be a storyteller They have your resume already Answer the question The essay should sound like it was written by an 18 year old!

  28. Lamar College Visit Policy • Must be approved in advance • Send an email to rgraves1@ houstonisd.org • 2 approved visit days count as extracurricular • No more than 5 extracurricular each semester More than 2 visit days could be excused absences with proper documentation
