  1. Leveling the Playing Field for Students with Physical Impairments Using Technology as a Tool to Ensure Success for All Students

Universal Design • American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that public facilities be accessible (1990) • 1997 IDEA amendments: all students must have access to general education curriculum; NCLB 2002 • Adaptations subsequently applied to computers: Microsoft (Accessibility Options) and Apple (Easy Access) operating systems

  3. Assistive Technology • Any item, piece of equipment, or product, whether acquired commercially, something modified or custom made that is used to increase, maintain, and/or improve the functional capability of individuals with disabilities.” (Assistive Technology Act of 1998) • Examples in the school setting include computer hardware and software, communication devices, wheelchairs, personal devices such as glasses, hearing aids, etc..

  4. Computer Hardware • Mouse options & alternative pointing systems • Keyboard modifications • Switch access

  5. Computer Software • Reading programs: WYNN reader, Read-Out-Loud, Kurzweil • Writing support: word prediction, Write- Out-Loud, Intellitalk, Clicker, Writing with symbols • Voice Recognition: Dragon Naturally Speaking • Organization: Inspiration, Draftbuilder (SOLO)

  6. Use of readily available objects at low cost Examples: pencil grip, large crayons, modify working area for easy reach, dycem (non slip pad), books on tape from library, digital media, increase copy size of worksheets Use of laminated pictures, letters, numbers Low Tech Ideas

How do I get this stuff? • First step is to ask yourself “what does the student need to be able to do?”..student first, technology second.. • Team approach--Assistive Tech Department??; PT/OT; SLP; Collaboration w/ University of Wa or SETC • Lending libraries- Special Ed Technology Center (SETC); Western Washington University
