  1. Manufacturer’s Recommendations • Remove all horizontal flooring, wood, composite lumber, etc. from existing deck. • CAUTION: Have a qualified person inspect all footings and joists. (See www.NADRA.org for checklist.) • CAUTION: Make sure the ledger board is bolted or all-thread bolted all the way through the box beam on house. • The manufacturer recommends footings 6 ft. on center and floor joists 16 in. on center.

  2. Instructions for Adding Silca GrateTM to an Existing Deck Structure

  3. Preparation • Establish finished floor elevation. • Determine thickness of deck material choice.

  4. Preparation • Establish finished floor elevation. - Allow for existing constraints such as doorway thresholds.

  5. Preparation • Make plan of layout and pattern of deck materials (i.e. Natural stone, paver stone, brick or tile).

  6. Choose From 3 Border Types • Natural stone, pavers, tile, etc. • Wrap rim joist with aluminum or vinyl • Fascia board (various materials) Brick End of Joist (Front) View Fascia board

  7. Deck Construction • Make plan of layout and pattern of deck materials (i.e. Natural stone, paver stone, brick or tile). • Add 2x4 cleats on to both sides (except the exterior of the fascia boards) of joists 1-1/2” below the top surface of the joists.

  8. Cut Silca GratesTM to Fit Between Joists Note: Silca GratesTM have 2 sets of 3 screw holes on one side and 1 set of 3 on the other. Cut to width on the 2-set side.

  10. Place Silca GratesTM on Top of 2x4 Cleats • Screw in place with deck screws • Install Silca GrateTM over desired area.

  11. Install Geotextile / Landscape Blanket • Install geotextile / landscape blanket over Silca GratesTM if polymeric sand is to be used in construction.

  12. Test Install for Fit • Now is the best time to test install your choice of decking to check for pattern and material fit and trim.

  14. Fill All Joints of Decking Material with Polymeric Sand* *See next page for polymeric sand application tips.

Polymeric Sand Application Tips • Check weather forecast to allow for 12 hours of curing time without precipitation. • Pour Polymeric sand into all joints from bag. • Use broom to ensure all joints are filled with sand. • Excess sand on the surface of the decking material can be removed using a wet/dry vacuum or leaf blower LIGHTLY. Be sure all joints remain filled with sand. • Lightly mist polymeric sand and entire deck material surface using a garden hose or mister. Be sure all joints are saturated. • Repeat misting 3 times.
