  1. Biology 1/18/11 The Light Windmill (Radiometer) • Left side activity… • Examine the light windmill (radiometer) • Draw a sketch of the windmill Observations Describe what you see happening. Questions: 1. What does the radiometer show you about light? 2. Explain why the paddles spin. Hypothesize: What will the radiometer do in a dark closet? If, Then, because Three Reflection Questions: This surprised me because... A question I still have is… I learned that…….

  2. Color Wavelengths

  3. 1/21/11 Biology… Bellwork • Take out your graph for “Why are Plants Green?” • Looking at your graph: • 1) what wavelengths of visible light are absorbed best by chlorophyll A? ____chlorophyll B?__ • 2) what colors of visible light are absorbed best by chlorophyll A? ____chlorophyll B?__ • 3) based on this data, do plants absorb green light? • 4) Assuming light is energy (Monday’s topic), which colors of light provide the most energy to plants? • Experimental set –up. Take out a sheet of paper. Design an experiment to test whether plants grow better under green light or white light.

  4. Experimental Design • Question: • Hypothesis (if, then, because) • Materials: #’s BIG (include measuring device!) • Procedure (use measuring device!) 1) 1st 2) 2nd 3) etc. Include: • 1 manipulated variable • Controlled variables (things kept the same) • Experimental control (something to compare)

  5. Do Plants Respire? DATA: CO2 Response of Plants in Bromthymol Blue

  6. Conclusion: 1. Restate the hypothesis . Start with “The hypothesis that ……..(insert hypothesis) was supported or not supported. DO NOT say that it was TRUE, CORRECT, etc.

  7. 2. Give the results • . You must refer to your data- in this case it is the observation. • Sometimes it will be quantitative (numbers). • You compare the high numbers with the low • (extremes) or you compare the observation • with the experimental control.

  8. Give the big idea • (ah hah). Therefore ………

  9. Review starts today! • Name all four organic (biomolecules that make up living tissue) • Where do these come from? • Where does the protein in your palm come from?
