  2. inherited Something, such as a trait, passed on to an offspring from its parent

  3. environment An organism’s surroundings, conditions, or influences.

  4. Learned behavior A behavior an animal learns from its parents

  5. instinct A behavior that an organism inherits

  6. offspring An issue or progeny of a person, animal or plant

  7. traits The distinguishing qualities of a person, animal or plant

  8. purebred An organism whose ancestors derive over many generations from a recognized breed

  9. hybrid The offspring of two animals of different breeds or species

  10. Mitosis The process of cell division which produces an exact copy of the cell

  11. Sexual reproduction The form of reproduction in which cells from two parents unite to form a zygote

  12. Asexual reproduction Reproduction by simple cell division

  13. metamorphosis A change in the shape or characteristics of an organism’s body as it grows and matures

  14. Direct development A kind of growth where organisms keep the same body features as they grow larger

  15. Punnett square A tool used to determine the probability of the traits of an organism

  16. Dominant trait A strong trait

  17. Recessive trait A weak trait

  18. crossbreeding Reproduction between two animals or plants of different breeds or species

  19. DNA Nucleic acid found in the nucleus of cells that is responsible for transmitting hereditary traits to organisms
