Summary of findings • Accounting signals of realized fundamentals (earnings, accruals and volatility) have in-sample power in predicting crises • Fundamentals are more important than self-fulfilling beliefs when accounting signals have low precision. • Results hold after controlling for previously documented leading indicators.
