Talking about weather • Discussing the weather is a very human thing to do, and every language has its own way of doing it. • If you think about it, the weather is one thing that is certainly a universal topic of interest. • It’s a topic that’s discussed at all levels of society, no matter your color, religion, or socioeconomic status.

  8. Talking about the weather in English. • It’s hot out. • It’s nice out. • It’s windy. • It’s snowing. • It’s raining. • It’s sunny. • It’s cold out.

  9. Note that in English… • To talk about the weather, we usually say… • It’s…(some weather word)…

  10. How do we do it in Spanish? • Abran el libro en la pág. 18 y discutancomodecir el tiempo.

  11. First off… • Note that the word “tiempo” here does not refer to time, but to weather. • It does NOT refer to what time it is. That word is la hora.

  12. Hace… • Note that most phrases for weather do use the phrase “Hace…” • “Hace” comes from the verb hacer, which means “to do” or “to make”. • In an overly literal sense, you think about what the weather is making, instead of what it is. • Note that two phrases, llueveand nieva, do NOT use the “hace” phrase.
