What does it mean to be transgender? • Working definitions of “transgender”: • Assigned sex doesn’t match their gender identity. • Often noticed at a very young age. • Gender expression transgresses traditional gender role. • Many different definitions • Very diverse community • Not all people who fit under these definitions actually classify themselves as transgender (i.e.- drag queens & kings). • Intersections of class, race, age, ability, etc. • May not be able to afford hormones. • Geographical location may influence availability of resources. • Many male to females transition late in life.

Transgender Umbrella • Cross dresser • one who enjoys dressing as a gender different than their own • “transvestite” used in past • Intersex • one who is born with ambiguous genitalia • “hermaphrodite” used in past • Genderqueer / Genderfuck • MtF / FtM • Two-Spirit • -Native American term for one who balances both masculine and feminine qualities • Transsexual • -one who uses technology as a component of their transition to another gender (ie- Sexual Realignment Surgery, Hormone Replacement Therapy)

  5. What needs to change? • Systemic Discrimination • Employment • Housing • Medical • Media • Hate Crimes • Social Stigma • People have a right to happiness & to be active participants in their communities

How can you contribute? • Gender identity & expression protections for both colleges. • Panels or speaking engagements for gender-related courses. • Transgender-focused events for GLBT campus group (“T” often silent). • Sign up for alert e-mails from national organizations: • Intersex Society of North America • National Center for Transgender Equality • National Gay & Lesbian Task Force • Lambda Legal
