  1. Agenda 5.13

  2. Monday, May 13, 2013 Please grab your folder and journal. Thanks!  Warm-up: The visuals from last week are posted in the back. Feel free to check them out as you wait for class to start.

  3. Questioning With your desk partner, discuss the following questions: • What is questioning? Where do questions come from? • What are some things we ask questions about in every day life? What questions have you asked today (either aloud or in your mind)? In a JOURNAL, take notes on your discussion and record your answers.

  4. THIN or Right There Questions • Small clarifying questionsthat are literally, right in the text • Often answer… Who, What, Where, When, Why

  5. THICK or “I Wonder…” Questions • Anything that is happening that you are curious about. • Usually harder to answer and have more complicated answers… What if…? How did…? Why did…? What would happen if…? What caused…? What might…? How would I feel if…? Why do you think…? Why is…?

  6. Timing of Questions • We ask questions BEFORE, DURING, and even AFTER our reading. • BEFORE we can anticipate what questions might be answered in the text. • DURING reading we can ask questions that clarify our understanding as well as help us predict what will happen next. • AFTER read we can ask questions that deepen our understanding of the story and leave us thinking.

  7. Thick Thin

  8. Read Aloud – Model & Practice • First, I’m going to read you the title and show you the cover and we’ll brainstorm some questions we might have about the story. • Then, I’m going to read a small portion of text and model thick and thin questions. • After that, I’m going to read some more of the text. When I stop, brainstorm with your desk partner a couple thin AND thick questions to ask. Write them down in your journal under your notes from earlier. • Finally, we’ll share some of our questions.

  9. SILENT READING • On a fresh page in your journal, draw a line down the middle. Put today’s date. • Before/During/After your reading today, you will write down THREE questions on the LEFT side of your paper. • If you find the answers to any of your questions, you will write them down on the RIGHT side of your paper. • We will keep a running list of questions the rest of this week.
