It occurs in all states of matter. Involving aspects of theoretical description, experimental observation and technical application, it is a subject of really interdisciplinary relevance. In porous materials, diffusion is one of the decisive processes, which may control the rate of their practical use. Bringing together the expertise of world leading scientists from the Netherlands Institute for Catalysis Research and the Leipzig University a consortium is established, which offers unique prospects in the research and education in the field of molecular mass transfer in porous media, and is expected to lead to substantial advancement of theory and practice on this topic. The consortium involves expertise in all major areas of the field, including the theoretical fundamentals, sophisticated measuring techniques, the fabrication know-how of high-tech materials and their application in advanced technologies. The complementary specialization of the involved groups guarantees a comprehensive education programme and provides best conditions for exploring the synergism of collaboration. Principle of diffusion measurement by NMR and types of information provided by this technique. (focal subject A) Influence of defects on the external crystal surface on the isobutane uptake into MFI-type zeolite The non-etched sample (strong surface barriers) Faster desorption in the middle part of the crystals than near crystal edges: desorption through the crack surface Faster desorption in the crystal part with the crack Application of interference and IR microscopy to study (transient) intracrystalline concentration profiles in zeolites. (focal subject A) Multitrack equipment • fast • minute amounts • Diffusion • Adsorption • Catalysis Rapid monitoring of Diffusion and Reaction by TAP (temporal analysis of products). (focal subject B) Top-view Cross-sectional view Silicalite-1 30-50 mm Toplayer 200 mm • Intergrown crystals • Stainless steel support Support 3 mm Considering „pore“ fluxes in capillaries and roads (focal subject C) Zeolite membranes: huge differences in molecular confinement and hence in the flux rates help to upgrade gasoline.
