  1. Should children be charged as an adult? By: Leatrice Harris Period 7th

  2. Survey

  3. Thesis • The youngest child to be charged as an adult was 12 years old and they didn’t even have a jail uniform to fit him. Children should not be charged as an adult because their brain is not fully develop. The family should have seen signals. Something might have been going on at home. They would need therapy.

  4. Main points • A) Brain not fully develop • B) History • C) Taught & Learn

  5. Brain is not fully develop • Children’s brains are not fully develop. • They say that the brain is more impressionable in a child’s early life rather than when they get older. • The negative side of this is that the child’s brain is more vulnerable to problems of development I n their environment such as un-nurturing and impoverished.

  6. The fate of children convicted • There were 73 cases reported by the EJI that children 13 to 14 has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. • Most of these children come from an abusive home, have been raped, neglected, etc. 2/3 of these children are African American. • Most of these children will never see what the world has to offer because they made a mistake when they were younger.

  7. They do what they are learn • Children often do things that they are taught or seen. When a child hits someone or talks back we always say “ that's wrong” or something else. That’s how they learn right from wrong. • They might have seen someone kill some one else on a movie, TV show or video game and that is what seen. • Why do people let their children watch movies and TV shows with crime in it and aspect their child to know what they just seen was wrong?

  8. Statistics • “Each year there are over 750,000 delinquency cases that go before judges in the United States. Tens of thousands of these children are tried as adults.” • “In the last twenty years, more than 150 children have been sentenced to death in the United States.” • http://www.come-over.to/fasstar/juvcrime1.htm

  9. Conclusion • Children should not be charged as an adult because their brain is not fully develop. The family should have seen signals. Something might have been going on at home. • A child should not be punish for the rest of their life because of a mistake that they did when they were younger.
