  2. HISTORICAL AMMAN • Most Palestinian Arabs are refugees of the Arab-Israeli wars 1948 and 1967. Majority moved from West Bank to Amman, Jordan between wars. • Nabataean's built Petra between 400 BCE and 160 CE. • Ottoman Empire collapsed after 400 years and was split by Britain Jordan.

  3. GEOGRAPHY • Total area: 92,300 sq km • Climate- Mostly arid desert (very dry and hot) 88% • Rainy season(in the west) goes from November to April. Jordan Valley

  4. South Jordan Desert Topography -Main topographical feature is a dry plateau running from north to south(area of highland with flat terrain) -Terrain is mostly desert plateau in the East and highland area in the West

  5. Jordan Rift Valley -Jordan River, Hula Valley, Lake Tiberias, Dead Sea - Year round agricultural climate, fertile soils and water supply made it a site for agriculture dating to about 10,000 years ago

  6. NATURAL RESOURCES -Phosphates used for mining purposes -Potash used primarily as an agricultural fertilizer (plant nutrient) because it is a source of soluble potassium -Shale Oil Covers 60% of Jordan’s territory and is considered of high quality

Geography effects • -Jordanians depend on the Transjordan plateau for the majority of the farming that they do. • -Land Use: • -Arable land: 3.32% • -Permanent crops: 1.18% • -Other: 95.5% • -Natural Hazards: Droughts, Periodic Earthquakes • Major Effects: • Limited natural fresh water resources • -deforestation • -overgrazing • -soil erosion

  8. economy -GDP: $30.76 billion (2008) -GDP per capita: $5,000 (2008) Industries: -service industries make up the largest part of the country: -employ about 70% of Jordan's workers -government and military employ many Jordanians -dependent on foreign aid for most everything -majority of Jordan workers work abroad and send money home (No jobs in Jordan)

  9. Constitutional Monarchy • Islam is official religion • 95% population are Muslims • Follows Sunni or Orthodox branches of Islam, others are Christians • Jordan is the only Arab country where Palestinians can become citizens RELIGIOUS

  10. CULTURE CAMEL RACING • Children required to attend school through 9th grade. • 4 major universities, many community colleges. • Basketball, camel racing, horse racing, soccer, martial arts, folk dancing.

  11. 10% population live in Palestinian refugee camps [majority made of concrete] • Women cover up, men cover their heads with a Kaffiyeh. • Majority of population live in capital city, Amman and surrounding cities.

  12. Cheese, Bread, Rice, veggies, chicken, lamb, coffee, tea, juice. • Mansef-lamb cooked in yogurt on rice. • Arabic • English is widely taught and spoken as well

  13. COUSIN + COUSIN = • 14% of Jordanian women are in the workforce. • Unemployment rate is 65% for women.
