  1. ME886.3 Advanced Engineering Design Method Instructor: Dr. Chris Zhang

  2. Course Outline • System and system design • Conceptual design • Modular design • Robust design • Integrated design and control

  3. Course Outline Basic concepts in system and system design • Everything is viewed as a system: a systems perspective of everything • System: what it is and how we represent everything into a system

  4. Course Outline Conceptual design • The first step of design is to generate design concepts that meet customer requirements. • A systematic way to conduct conceptual design.

  5. Course Outline Modular design • Computer is highly modularized but the modularization of the computer takes about 40 years. • A systematic way to modularize a product so that the time to modularize a product may be shortened. • Modularization feasibility: some types of products may not be suitable to modularization?

  6. Course Outline Robust design Robustness: An ability of a system that keeps its original function unchanged under disturbances. Robust design: determine parameters or values of parameters such that a system can have a desired level of robustness.

  7. Assessments • Class discussion/presentation (Remark 2), 10% • Assignments/lab report (robust design, Remark 1), 10% • Project (Remark 3), 20% • Final exam,60%
