  2. The University Estates Strategy • 1. Underpins the University Corporate Plan • 2. Addresses the specific Goal; • ” To ensure academic and financial sustainability, while providing maximum value • to students and stakeholders and behaving responsibly towards the environment” • 3. Meets the Objectives; • “Reduce the size of the estate and the number of freestanding sites, with a view to minimising • academic and social isolation and increasing efficiency in resource utilisation”, and, • “Promote environmental sustainability in our policies, operations and actions and reduce the University’s carbon footprint” • 4. Board of Governors in June 2010 approved the adoption of a “two campus strategy” with a City Centre location being one of its two main campuses

  3. The University Estates Strategy • Reasons for the creation of a City Centre Campus • Essential to support delivery of the University’s academic ambitions, provision of such facilities critical to improving student experience • Opportunity to contribute more effectively to the wider economic and social prosperity of the city and the region through increased employer engagement • A catalyst for the physical and environmental regeneration of Eastside • An enhanced student experience through the provision of improved learning and teaching facilities that reflect modern learning methods and group sizes • Improved efficiency of space usage, through rationalisation of specialist facilities currently replicated at two and three sites • Reduction in operating costs from rationalisation of services and support functions • Reduction in carbon emissions and improve environmental impact • Recognition that investment in the estate and facilities are key to the University’s competitive positioning and future business model • The location at City North campus is not overly popular with students and has consistently been shown to be a negative factor in student satisfaction.

What the Papers said on 11th March 2010 “Birmingham City Council was quick to capitalise today on one of Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s relatively rare visits to the city to announce the preferred route of High Speed 2, the new rail connection from London to Birmingham and beyond. Council leader Mike Whitby rubbed shoulder with the PM in the middle of Eastside on the proposed site of the new Birmingham High Speed rail terminus and waxed lyrical about the £1.2bn economic impact of high speed rail on the city” Making Tracks by Lisa Pilkington • But we didn’t think of him!
