Learning Objectives • The participant will be able to: • Discuss the strengths of ACHA-NCHA as an assessment process of the health status of a population with regards to the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion • Distinguish between the health behaviors/status of domestic and international students • Develop critical next questions in implementing evidence-based decision-making regarding the health and wellness of International students

Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion • Presents fundamental strategies and approaches for health promotion • Conceptualizes health promotion actions • Includes building healthy public policy, creating supportive environments, strengthening community actions, developing personal skills, and reorienting health services

  4. What is the National College Health Assessment (NCHA)? Partnered with the American College Health Association Comprehensive & confidential survey of students’ health behaviors, beliefs, & perceptions 550+ participating colleges and universities since 2000 First administered at USC in 2000 Annual administration

  5. NCHA’s 10 Assessment Areas General health Disease and injury prevention Academic impacts Alcohol, tobacco, & other drug use Violence, abuse, and personal safety Sexual behavior Nutrition and exercise Mental health Sleep Demographics and student characteristics

Why Conduct the NCHA? • Serves as a comprehensive needs assessment for student health and wellness • Needs Assessment: A formal process of identifiying problems and needs in a target population so as to make decisions, determine priorities, set objectives, and explore alternative approaches or methods to aid in the planning and implementation of programs.* • A needs assessment is the first step in evidence-based programming models *Direct reference from Modeste, N.M. & Tamayose, T.S. The NCHA Allows Us To… Gain an objective picture of students’ health and wellness Contrast with clinical indicators and anecdotal evidence (population-based vs. individual) Clarify priorities and allocate resources Advocate for policy change Establish a baseline and track change over time (USC data) Compare and Contrast (ACHA data from other institutions and aggregated, OTC data, Monitoring the Future, CIRP, NESSE, etc)

The NCHA at USC (Methodology) • Fall 2009 via web • Sent to all international students (n=6,100) • Invitation via email; two follow-up emails • Incentives: • Every 25th respondent: $10 iTunes gift card • Drawing for ten $100 Visa gift cards • Final n=978 (16%) • Comparison group is Spring 2009 survey of all UPC students, n=633
