    1. Role of Education in Disaster Risk Reduction

    2. 2 ROLE OF EDUCATION IN DISASTER RISK REDUCTION IMPORTANT UN DOCUMENTS THAT FOCUS ON ASPECTS RELATED TO EDUCATION OF CHILDREN: United Nations Millennium Declaration (Millennium Development Goals - to be achieved by 2015) Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015: (Building the resilience of nations and communities to disasters-HFA)

    3. 3 ROLE OF EDUCATION IN DISASTER RISK REDUCTION MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (TO BE ACHIEVED BY 2015) Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger Goal 2: ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women Goal 4: Reduce child mortality rate Goal 5: Improve maternal health Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development

    4. 4 ROLE OF EDUCATION IN DISASTER RISK REDUCTION HYOGO FRAMEWORK FOR ACTION 2005-2015: (Building the resilience of nations and communities to disasters) Priorities for action: 1.Ensure that disaster risk reduction is a national and a local priority with a strong institutional basis for implementation 2. Identify, assess and monitor disaster risks and enhance early warning 3. USE KNOWLEDGE, INNOVATION AND EDUCATION TO BUILD A CULTURE OF SAFETY AND RESILIENCE AT ALL LEVELS 4. Reduce the underlying risk factors 5. Strengthen disaster preparedness for effective response at all levels

    5. 5 ROLE OF EDUCATION IN DISASTER RISK REDUCTION HYOGO FRAMEWORK ACTION AREA 3, INVOLVES: Knowledge management Education Risk awareness

    6. 6 ROLE OF EDUCATION IN DISASTER RISK REDUCTION PRIMARY SCHOOL CURRICULA SHOULD INCLUDE: Basic education on earth science; Concepts on natural hazards and disasters; Hazard mapping of the community where schools are inserted; How to deal with distress and trauma caused by natural disasters.

    7. 7 ROLE OF EDUCATION IN DISASTER RISK REDUCTION STUDENTS SHOULD BE TAUGHT ON FUNDAMENTS OF THE MAIN NATURAL HAZARDS: High winds (cyclones, typhoons, hurricanes) Storm surges Flooding/flash flooding Landslides Earthquakes Tsunamis Volcanic eruptions Wildlandfires Droughts

    8. 8 ROLE OF EDUCATION IN DISASTER RISK REDUCTION SCHOOLS HAVE TO BE SAFE PLACES: Building schools following the principles of anti-seismic construction; Making schools in high-risk disaster areas safer; EXAMPLES OF SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES OF DISASTERS: Kashmir earthquake (October 2005) killed about 17,000 school children; Sichuan Earthquake (May 2008): About 19,000 schoolchildren died; Sindh and Punjab floods (Summer 2010): Over 300 children have lost their lives.

    9. 9 ROLE OF EDUCATION IN DISASTER RISK REDUCTION THE STRATEGY FOR DRR IN SCHOOLS CURRICULA SHOULD INCLUDE: Promotion of more and better teaching of earth science with special incidence on hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction Promotion of the links between schools and communities in which they are inserted; Schools as centers for dissemination of knowledge on DRR to the communities; Schools as centers for drills involving students and population; Protection of schools against multiple hazards.

    10. 10 ROLE OF EDUCATION IN DISASTER RISK REDUCTION To achieve results in education on DRR is necessary to minimize: Governance failures Existence of pockets of poverty Specific areas of policy neglect.

    11. 11 HOW CAN WE RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS? Taking advantage of the celebration of International Days: Distribution of Press Releases to the media Organization of events (examples): Public visits to the headquarters; Lectures in schools and public institutions;

    12. 12 HOW CAN WE RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS? EXAMPLES OF UN INTERNATIONAL DAYS RELATED TO NATURAL DISASTERS AND ENVIRONMENT: UNESCO - World Water Day March, 22 WMO - World Meteorological Day March, 23 UNEP World Environment Day 5 June UNCCD - World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought June, 17 UNEP - International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer - September,16 ISDR - International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction - second Wednesday of October

    13. 13 FINAL NOTE: Are the floods in Pakistan associated with Climate Change? There is no evidence of that, but: Close relationship has been detected between La Nia episodes and the enhancement of rainfall in several areas of the Asia/Pacific Region and northern Australia. The current La Nia followed the most recent El Nio episode whose start was in June 2009 and end in May 2010. La Nia is an ocean-atmosphere phenomenon characterized by the occurrence of sea surface temperature lower than normal for several months in the equatorial region of the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The current La Nia is expected to last at least into the Northern Hemisphere up to spring 2011. It is unclear whether the current La Nia episode has contributed to the floods in Pakistan.
