  2. Overview This lesson is about using various resources and tools to make wise purchases and to develop a budget as an educated consumer. Elementary second grade students will explore the topics within the content areas of mathematics, social studies, science and language arts.

Georgia Performance Standards • SS2E3 The student will explain that people usually use money to obtain goods and services they want. • S2CS2 Students will have the computation and estimation skills necessary for analyzing data and following scientific explanations. • M2N1 Students will understand the place value representation of whole numbers through four digits. • ELA2R3 The student acquires and uses grade-level words to communicate effectively. • Technology Foundation Standards 1, 2, 5, 9

  4. Students, Are You Ready? Introduction You both just graduated college and you have started your own company working together as electricians. You need to buy a new truck, some tools and a cell phone. You need to do some research to get the best deals.

  5. Task • You will work in groups • You will research material items • You will complete a budget using a program called Excel

  6. Process • Get in your group • Research Prices • Truck • Tools • Cell phone

  7. Person One Person One should help click through the power point and read aloud the information that is written. Person Two Person Two should listen to the information and write it down on budget worksheet. Together, Do the Research Work together by reading and discussing the choices. Which is the better buy? Why? Will be you spending or saving more money with the choice you made? Remember, the goal is to be smart about your choices.

  8. Wait!!!!! Don’t you need to know how much money you already have to buy all of these awesome things? Together, you both have a total of $30,000. That should be enough money to get you started.

  9. First, Find a Truck. Remember to write your information down so both of you can compare and make the best choice.

  21. Choices, Choices, Choices! • Look over your information to see if it is correct. You can click back through the show to view it again if you missed something. • Take some time (more than 5 minutes) and discuss your options. • Think about the items that would best suit your needs as new electricians who want to do their best job with their customers. • Make some choices about which items you would like to purchase. • Continue to fill out your budget sheet.

  22. Finally, Explain your reasoning. There are no right or wrong answers to this activity. I want to see if you and your partner can do these things: • Work together as partners • Use the computer safely • Collect and write down your data • Use the data to make good choices • Arrive at a decision to start your company • Be able to put your data back into the budget sheet in the computer lab with the teacher’s help Look on the next slide to see how you will be graded
