  1. Asteroid Belt, Kuiper Belt, & theOort Cloud

  2. Asteroid Belt Asteroids are material left over from the formation of the solar system. Your Subtitle Here • One theory is that they are the remains of a planet that was destroyed in a massive collision long ago.

  3. More likely, asteroids are material that never coalesced into a planet. In fact, if the estimated total mass of all asteroids was gathered into a single object, the object would be less than 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) across, less than half the diameter of our Moon.

  4. Kuiper Belt-Named after astronomer Gerard Kuiper • The Kuiper Belt extends from about 30 to 55 AU. • Probably populated with hundreds of thousands of icy bodies larger than 100 km (62 miles) across and an estimated trillion or more comets.

  5. Located in the regions beyond Neptune.

  6. Oort Cloud • In 1950, Dutch astronomer Jan Oort proposed that certain comets come from a vast, extremely distant, spherical shell of icy bodies surrounding the solar system. • Now named the Oort Cloud, occupies space at a distance between 5,000 and 100,000 astronomical units. • The outer extent of the Oort Cloud is considered to be the "edge" of our solar system, where the sun's physical and gravitational influence ends.

  7. The Oort Cloud probably contains 0.1 to 2 trillion icy bodies in solar orbit. • Thought that disturbances in the orbit of one of these bodies in the outer region of the Oort Cloud can cause the object to streak into the inner solar system as a long-period comet. Long-period comets- have very large, eccentric orbits & are observed in the inner solar system only once.
