  3. Flag • The official flag of Brazil was adopted on November 19th 1989. • Brazil is in the Southern hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere.

  4. Where? • Brazil is located in South America. • Brazil in on the South American plate. Language • The people in Brazil speak Portuguese [official language], Spanish, English and French. • Longitude and Latitude is 74˚west˚ to 34˚west˚, 32˚south to 5˚north. Capital is Brasilia. Major cities are: San Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Recife, Porto Alegre. Land area 8 515 767 km2.

  6. Landforms In Brazil there are lots of different landforms. There are rivers like the Amazon River. Rain forests, jungles, hills and mountains and fields and volcanoes . On the border of Brazil is a waterfall called Iguacu Falls.

  7. Natural Resources Brazil produces cacao, citrus fruit, coffee, cotton, lumber, sugar, tobacco, soybeans, wheat, rice and corn. Brazil has deposits of gold and precious stones. It has iron and other metal ores. But it has very little oil to turn into gasoline fuel. Instead of buying oil from other countries. Brazil turns sugarcane plants into alcohol to use as fuel.

  8. Climate • Each year there is there is a dry season and a wet season, with an average annual rainfall of about 60 inches. • The heaviest rains occur in the summer [December to February]. The temperature is about 40 degrees Celsius • In the winter the temperature is between 18 degrees Celsius and 27 degrees Celsius.

  9. Education • About half of Brazil’s people are under eighteen years old. Many of them never have the chance to go to school. They are too poor, or live in parts of Brazil where there are no schools to attend. • Millions on children attend school for only a few years. Then they must go to work. Those students who can afford to go to school attend eight years of primary school, followed by four years of high school. Only a small number of students are able to go on to Brazil’s universities and technical colleges.

Government • In Brazil they have a Federal presidential constitutional republic. • The president of Brazil is DilmaRousseff [PT] was elected on January 1st 2012, the vice president is Michel Temer and he was also elected on January 1st 2012. • President and vice president are elected on the same ticket by popular vote for a single 4-year term.   11. Religion • 74% Roman Catholic , 15% Protestant, 1% Spiritualist, 7% no religion.

  12. Population • Over time this number is growing by 1.1%. The population in brazil is 205 716 890 in 2012. • People in Brazil live to be between 72 years old to 79 years.

  13. Major Industries • The Itaipú Dam was begun in 1975 and began generating electricity in 1984. It is 624 feet high, its walls are 542 feet thick, and a lake was formed behind the dam that covers 190 km. • Foreign companies were invited to set up in this country, and large-scale industries were established for the construction of ships, vehicles of every kind, and aircraft. • The currency in Brazil is in reals [BRL] • 1.00 BRL = 0.486974 CAD

  14. Natural Hazards • Floods are a big natural hazard in Brazil because it rains so much. • Volcanoes are another natural hazard in Brazil.

  16. History In 1945, Brazil became a founding member of the United Nations. During the 1950s, Brazil grew rapidly. Power plants were built, factories were started. In 1957, a nuclear reactor began operating in São Paulo. In 1960, the government moved to Brasilia, the capital city. Then in 1964, military leaders took power in Brazil. They made their own laws and grew rich. The Brazilian people lost many of their rights and grew poor. But, in 1985, there was a change, a civilian president was elected. The people gained more power. In 1988, a new Constitution became law. It guarantees more rights for all Brazilians.

  17. Some Important Leaders • Dom Pedro II Emperor from 1831-1839. He was emperor when he was 5 years old. • Diogo Antonio Feijo In the Sao Paolo regend from 1835-1837, fist non-royal to hold the position alone.

Important Wars • President Wenceslaus Braz cooperated with the Allies and declared war on Germany during World War I. • In World War II, Brazil again cooperated with the Allies, welcoming Allied air bases, patrolling the South Atlantic, and joining the invasion of Italy after declaring war on the Axis powers.

  19. Native People and Ancient Civilizations • The Indians were the first people of Brazil. But, for hundreds of years, other people have been coming to Brazil. The Portuguese came as settlers, and Africans came as slaves. Today, most Brazilians are Indian, African and Portuguese . Many Brazilians are a mixture of all three.

  20. Interesting Facts • Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world not just by size but by population as well. • Brazil has a national holiday, Independence Day, September 7th started in 1822. • The national anthem in Brazil is Hino Nacional Brasileiro. • Brazil is divided into three different time zones.
