  8. tv Fathom10 commissioned for, among others, • Shipboard familiarisation • Unberthing, berthing and anchoring procedures • Basic chartwork: setting courses, position fixing & calculating ETA’s • Identifying terrestrial aids to navigation: channel buoys and lighthouses • Pre-sailing checks: Bridge equipment, ME’s, steering gear and requisite sailing information • Application of Colregs & basic radar operation / radar plotting • Hand/manual steering; switching to auto-pilot • Performing watchkeeping & lookout duties • Basic weather reporting for entry into Deck log: Wind, barometer, wind direction and speed, air and sea temperatures • Emergencies, e.g. MoB; Fire in ME compartment • General onboard, practical activities • Radio communication (VHF Ch 12) • Supplementing AB/OS and Oiler/Wiper Course

CHALLENGES • Placing our female students at sea • Paucity of cadet beths creates a bottle neck effect (unemployment) • Attracting the right calibre lecturing staff (Master’s degree & Master Unlimited / Chief Engineer CoC) • Non-recognition of CoC by CPUT (SAQA evaluation ?) • Sourcing funding to develop lecturing staff abroad to Master’s degree level • Updating the TRANSAS simulator to satisfy the revised STCW Manila requirements • No dedicated, SAMSA accredited, MEWT to integrate theoretical & practical training
