The culprit..... • Influenza virus A (H1 N1) “It is a common cold virus”
Virus.... • Influenza A (H1 N1) virus result of mutation of virus found in pigs • “Quadruple reassortant virus” • No harm in eating pork • Unlike in Bird Flu culling of pigs not warranted
So, how does virus spread ? • Human to Human ! • Mode of spread: sneeze/cough • Contact (oro-nasal secretions)
Who are at risk ? • Children and young adults • Doctors and Para Medics • Chronic Diseases: Cancers, High BP, Diabetes, HIV, Pulm TB, Malnutrition • Other Occupations: crowded and dinghy places, ? Contact with pigs
Incubation period • 1 to 2 days • 1 day prior to development of illness to 7 - 10 days Period of infectivity
Symptoms... No…. not these !
Emergency Warning Signs - Children • Fast breathing or trouble breathing • Skin developing bluish discolouration • Not eating or drinking properly • Excessive Irritability • Flu recurs with fever and worsened cough • Fever with rash
Emergency Warning Signs - Adults • Difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath • Chest or Abdominal pain • Sudden dizziness • Confusion • Severe or persistent cough
What to do ? • Protection • Consult Doctor immediately
Investigations... • Investigation and treatment – “Govt designated centres & Govt approved private hospitals” • Investigations • Real Time PCR • Viral Culture, Virus Genome Sequencing • Four fold rise in Swine Flu Influenza A (H1 N1) virus specific neutralising Antibodies
Medicine ? • It is a treatable condition • Drug of choice – Tamiflu(Oseltamivir) - Relenza (Zanamivir) • Prophylaxis - ..... till 10 days post exposure • Do not take medicine unless advised by Doctor !
