The letter exposed uncle tian and mrs. Jiang of trying to help mr. jiang (ji-li’s dad) who is thought to be a rightist. They are in trouble for trying to help him. Page 247

    Ji-li explains the people of china were so brain washed by the idea of creating a new china that many did not hate chairman mao for all the things that happened. In fact, in wasn’t until after his death that people realized all that happened. Ji-li tells us what happened to them following the last ransack. They were still considered a black family but Dad came home, grandma still swept, and mom wrote self criticism letters. Ji-li was denied many opportunities because of her bad class status. She briefly tells how her and her family came to the us and started over.
