  10. Government Regulation • In 1996, the Child Pornography Prevention Act was extended to include virtual porn. In 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned that. • Minimum regulation = government should only step in when an issue needs legal attention.

  11. Artistic Expression • Photographer “owns” the picture and can do what he/she wants

  13. Increase in Business • Aesthetically pleasing images will sell better • Digital manipulation allows magazines to do harmless editorial alterations • Sometimes photos are altered to seem more realistic (i.e. shading, lighting, contrast)

  16. Flaws in Marking Images • People may feel as though they no longer have freedom of expression • An icon may ruin an image’s artistic value • Watermark may become unreadable when converting image types

  17. Conclusion • Marking digitally altered images based on a standard scale • One of the most challenging issues that this policy will face is defining “art” in legal terms, and what types of digitally manipulated images will fall into this category.

  18. Discussion Should the Government have the power to regulate digitally manipulated images? Let’s apply the ethics we’ve learned to the 2 video skits we played.
