  1. APBON Potential Products2014 and onwards

  2. Suggestions • Regional Red List • KBAs • Essential Biodiversity Variables • Support for work on Mosses • Publishing data papers

  3. Regional Red List • Encourage Asia Pacific Countries to establish their National Redlists as instruments of prioritizing biodiversity conservation and publish in National CHM • Components: • Capacity building • Taxonomy • Data Entry • Conservation Assessment

  4. Regional Red List • Components continued • Monitor conservation threats(at national levelusingspecies data; conduct as part of conservation assessment) • Character: • Have, as a minimum a commondatabase structure (Darwin Core) • Includenationallyelectedcategoriesincluding ‘rare’ in addition to Darwin Core • Conservative, in preference to high integrity information

  5. Key Biodiversity Areas • Encourage Asia Pacific Countries to identify KBAs using their national red lists as well as IBA, IPA an other important areas as base of map-based site selection • Can constitute one APBON contribution to IPBES, CBD and the GEOBO (bon in a box) • Is a cost effective means for AP countries to identify particularly sensitive and ecologically important areas

  6. Key Biodiversity Areas Needs • Agree on the methodology • Think about the mechanics of how to implement KBA selectionprocessat national, subregional and regionallevel

  7. Essential Biodiversity Variables

  8. Essential Biodiversity Variables: Purpose • To establish baseline reference to understand and document (quality of) changes and impacts • Select clear variables to which everyone could agree to • May be an important APBON (soft) product to feed to IPBES, and may raise visibility of APBON • May be supported by MoE Korea

  9. Essential Biodiversity Variables: Challenges • More difficult to identify due to complexity, local occurrence, existing impacts • Difficult to use global tools • Ecosystem services are difficult to measure esp on the ground • Best way to go isthrough conservation assessment • Less tangible process and outputs compared to KBAs

  10. Essential Biodiversity Variables: Suggestions • Have a regional EBV • Network with the developers of the Global EBVs to informregional EBV identification process by identifying APBON members to attend EBV discussions • Engage in further discussions • Some initial suggestions • Monitor rate of species extinction (at national levelusingspecies data; conduct as part of conservation assessment) • Monitor rate of conservation threats • Use of satellite images (and time scale) to seewhatis happening regionally

  11. Support work on Mosses • East Asiaticdatabaseexisting, interactive databaseunder construction • Workshop • to introducePteridophytes, Bryophytes and Ferns • Introduction to biodiversity • Role in ecosystems, forestecology • Indicatorsrelated to Climate change • Practical uses such as in vertical gardening, moss walls • Identification of species to invite interest in thesespecies • Strategizefrom an applications point of view

  12. Data Paper Preparation: Collaboration among APBON Membership? Tools are available online and Yu Huang and Kit could support individual and group processes Needs • APBON to prioritizegeographies and themes • APBON members to collaborate on preparing data papers • Can the taxonomists in the room startat least 2 data papers for 2014 as a presentation to COP 12 (c/o Pensoft?) India, Malaysia • Anyoneinterested to publishthrough GBIF IPT tool?

  13. Additional Suggestions • Agree to open existing databases for access to data • Dr. Mangal Man Shakya offered to contribute a draft paper of APBON governance including membership • Another APBON workshop to discuss products outside of databases and data products

  14. Time Frame for Products

  15. Next Steps • Ideas from the 5th APBON to be presented to the Steering Committee and the Working Groups • Project preparation • Team constitution • Fund raising and • Execution • To be packaged as a proposal to MoE Korea for potential funding • Next APBON Meeting – Nepal offers to host after COP 12, end 2014 / early 2015

  16. Other Upcoming Meetings where APBON could be highlighted • East Asian Federation of Ecological Societies Meeting, 9 – 11 April, 2014, Hainan, China • GEOSS Meetings • April / May Japan, Discussion on EBVs • SBSTTA18 Meeting, May 2014 (Montreal, Canada) • GBIF21 Mid Sept 2014, New Delhi, India • CBDCOP 12 Korea 6-17 October, 2014 • APBON Side Event • World Parks Congress, Nov 12 – 19, 2014Sydney, Australia • December 2014, APBON, Nepal (proposed)
