  2. Over 50%of all recreational boating fatalities are in non-motorized vessels • 80% are the result of Fall Overboard/Capsizing & Sudden Cold Water Immersion • In  90%  of those fatalities, people were notwearing life jackets • Kayaking is the fastest growing sport over  the past 10 year period

FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PADDLE CRAFT (AS OF 23MAY08) (Presented in a single sheet format has been added to your packet) The following items are required minimum equipment for paddle craft: PFDs: 1 TYPE I, II, III, OR V LIFE JACKET IS REQUIRED FOR EACH POB. TYPE V MUST BE WORN IAW LABEL DIRECTIONS CHILDREN UNDER 13 MUST WEAR PFD (IF THE STATE HAS ESTABLISHED WEAR REQUIREMENTS THEY TAKE PRECEDENCE OVER FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS) SOUND PRODUCING SOME MEANS OF MAKING DEVICE: AN EFFICIENT SIGNAL IS REQUIRED. VISUAL DISTRESS IF OPERATING BETWEEN SUNSET DEVICE: AND SUNRISE MUST CARRY A VDS SUITABLE FOR NIGHT USE – EITHER 1 ELECTRIC LIGHT (FLASHLIGHT) OR 3 COMBO DAY/NIGHT FLARES NAVIGATION IF OPERATING BETWEEN SUNSET LIGHTS: AND SUNRISE, 1 WHITE LIGHT (FLASHLIGHT ACCEPTABLE) OR NAV LIGHTS FOR A SAILING VESSEL ANCHORING LIGHTS: NOT REQUIRED UNLESS ANCHORING IN/NEAR A NARROW CHANNEL/FAIRWAY – 1 ALL AROUND WHITE LIGHT

  9. Distribution of Ownership Stickers: Explain Their Importance • If your Paddlecraft is found, it can be returned to you • A simple phone call can alert if you are OK, or separated from your paddlecraft and in need of assistance

D1 2008 Statistics & Success There was a slight decline in the First Coast Guard District Recreational Boating and Paddling fatalities in 2008 There were 55 fatalities in 2008 as compared to 58 in 2007 Of the total 55 fatalities in 2008 only one person, a 3-year old girl on a 16’ capsized sailboat, wore a life jacket

  11. 2008 Statistics & Success cont. In looking at only Paddlesport Fatalities D1 had a total of 23 in 2007 and 14 in 2008 A reduction of 39.13%   No one was wearing a life jacket

  12. D1 2008 Statistics & Success cont. Breakdown with type of Paddlecraft 15 Canoe fatalities in 2007 vs. 10 in 2008 - a one-third reduction 8 Kayak fatalities in 2007 vs. 4 in 2008 - a fifty percent reduction
