BACKGROUND ON THE VIPHYA Planted in the 1950s and 60s for Paper & Pulp 53,000 ha of pine / gum plantations; 67,000 ha nat. forest Paper & Pulp Factory cancelled due to risks of polluting Lake Malawi Limited revenues for management: poor thinning and pruning, high losses from fire & disease Plantation monoculture has impacted biodiversity Access to private sector has resulted in exploitation with poor harvesting methods and little or no replanting

  7. OVERALL GOAL To develop a viable reforestation plan with the Forestry Dept. to increase sustainable supplies of forest products to meet Malawi’s diverse needs THE RESULTS WILL REDUCE DEFORESTATION IN PROTECTED AND CUSTOMARY LANDS

  8. PROJECT TIMEFRAME & VISION Government Support: A 40 Year Agreement was approved and signed between TLC and the Forestry Department in July 2011 Vision:Expand the model across the Viphya as well as to other plantations in the country

KEY OBJECTIVES • Management: Establish a self-sufficient operation for reforestation, harvesting and extraction in the Viphya. • Reforestation: Replant at a minimum ratio of 2:1 for each ha harvested with a balance of exotic & native species • Fire Control: Institute effective fire control measures • Timber : Supply quality timber to meet market needs • Fuel: Convert trees with no timber value and residues from logging into sustainable fuel products

Long Term Project Goals • Create a market driver for sustainable forest use including forest management and replanting, while meeting demands for energy, fuel and structural timber. • Develop carbon markets based on the high scale of replanting and sustainable fuel production. • Implement Malawi’s first commercial hardwood plantation with planting of the TectonaGrandisand KhayaAnthothecaspecies. • Develop additional projects that reduce deforestation and degradation with lower carbon gas emissions, including the promotion of efficient wood stoves and co-firing industrial boilers. • Potential bio-diesel production with alternative sources such as bamboo, ground nuts, and sunflower seeds. • Introduce biomass gasification for electricity generation.

Clean up operations are done after harvesting to reduce fire risks • This biomass is currently un-utilized due to lack of markets • The project proposes to convert this biomass into a packaged product for sale with improved cookstoves • Biomass briquettes could also be made as an alternative to charcoal • Briquettes could be used to co-fire in industrial boilers to reduce carbon emissions

Infrastructure Activities • Construction of a filling station with capacity for over 50,000 liters within the TLC area. • Housing for professional staff has been built, with accommodation for over 40 people. • Rehabilitation and grading of approximately 46 kilometers of road within TLC’s management area. Most of these roads were impassable forest tracks before TLC started operations. • 8 bridges and culverts constructed within TLC’s area. • 2 bridges outside of TLC’s area were rebuilt to assist a neighboring community.

EXPECTED SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACTS • Capacity to increase productivity and biodiversity with reduced losses from fire and disease • Employment of 70 staff and 400+ unskilled workers from surrounding villages • Social contributions for potable water, sanitation, schools, clinics • Revenues to Gov’t to help meet plantation operating costs • Growth of forestry & transport industry and eco-tourism • Carbon revenues from reforestation and fuel switching for industries that use coal
