  2. TGIN Project • TGIN project aims to investigate the exchange of people (migration) and knowledge between Turkey and Germany by analyzing innovation networks of the Turkish and German firms and/or researchers in selected industries. • The project merges the literature on innovation networks and on knowledge migration to derive policy conclusions aiming at improving and facilitating mutual learning and knowledge exchange between Turkey and Germany. • No study exists which scrutinizes innovation networks encompassing Turkish and German actors and institutions 9-10 June 2014

  3. TGIN Project • TGIN Project analyses the innovation networks between Germany and Turkey to show • the German side • the high economic potential Turkey can offer and • the Turkish side • the possibilities the German agents can offer for cooperation and mutual learning, leading to economic win-win situations. 9-10 June 2014

  4. TGIN Project • Although in the Turkish-German relations, the phenomenon of innovation networks has to be considered to be in its childbed, few cases exist which indicate the rich possibilities for economic integration and development of Turkish-German innovation networks • As the goal of the European Union is to develop towards the knowledge-based economy, this goal is strongly supported by the emergence of these networks which connect core European regions with European-Periphery regions characterized by a strong and dynamic catching up process. 9-10 June 2014

  5. Benefits for each Country • The relations between Germany and Turkey have been strong and deep-rooted. • The approximately 496.000 Turkish workers, together with their families making over three million Turkish-origin people living in Germany, of which more than 700,000 now German nationals, are an important factor in bilateral relations. Historically, Germany has also been supportive of Turkey’s European attempt. • While most of the EEC countries stated that Ankara Agreement should be suspended after 1960 military coup in Turkey, the President of the Commission, Walter Hallstein (German), convinced other member states that the Agreement should be signed. 9-10 June 2014

  6. Benefits for each Country • Germany has also been Turkey’s biggest trading partner in the EU. • While the volume of trade between Turkey and the Germany was about 6 billion in 1990, it has reached almost 24 billion Euros in 2009. Germany, with more than 4.000 firms is the biggest foreign investor in Turkey. • It also ranks first as the country of origin for tourists visiting Turkey. More than 4.4 million Germans visited the Turkey in 2009, which is about 20% of the total tourists coming to Turkey. 9-10 June 2014

  7. Benefits for each Country • Besides the ever-growing Turkish community in Germany, there is the presence of a continuously increasing number of German citizens, around 70.000 in Turkey both as visitors and as residents. • In addition to economics, there are also strong cultural and academic relations between Germany and Turkey. • A better understanding of the mechanisms of Innovation Networks with Turkish and German participants will strongly support the integration policy of Germany with respect to immigrants from Turkey. 9-10 June 2014

  8. Benefits for each Country • The focus on innovation and knowledge-based economies allows for a complete new perspective in immigration policies which will help to improve the integration of the two economies, in particular with the goal to support Turkey’s integration to the European Union. • Given the adverse effects of the world economic crisis, the uncertainty of the European Union membership process has been troublesome for Turkish business community. • In such an environment, individual efforts to maintain and gain competitive/regional advantage have become excessively important. 9-10 June 2014

  9. Benefits for each Country • For the German Business community, the need for skilled workers is indispensable for the growth of the economy, for increasing productivity and competitiveness in the global perspective. • Thus to understand the structure of innovation networks and the characteristics of the network members, case studies on successful agents and subgroups, will be important for both countries, and not only for big corporations but more important for SMEs, as a necessary response to the challenges of globalization. 9-10 June 2014
