  5. Goal theory • Short-term and long-term goals • Sub goals • Self-selected goals • Goals are stretching but realistic • Goals can be measured

  6. Self-determination theory • Humans strive to be self-governed • Behaviour should be “volitional, intentional and self-caused or self- initiated” • Three basic needs (of staff): • Autonomy • Relatedness • Competence • When intrinsically motivated, people want to engage in the activity (Wehmeyerand Little 2009; Hefferon and Boniwell2011)

Self-determination theory • Autonomy • Ability to make one’s own decisions • Has choices • Relatedness • Feeling part of a larger family or organisation • Able to communicate with others • Respecting others and feeling respected • Competence • Able to judge if they are performing tasks well • Skills are recognised and celebrated (Wehmeyerand Little 2009; Hefferon and Boniwell2011)
