Tectonic Plates • The Earth’s crust is made up of 7 main tectonic plates which ‘float’ on the mantle. • There are two different types of plate; oceanic (dense, thin) and continental (light but thick) • They move due to convection currents in the mantel. Convection Currents The magma in the mantle heats up when it is nearest the core. It then rises upwards towards the crust where it cools. When the magma cools, it then sinks back down towards the core. This constant cycle the convection current which causes the tectonic plates to move.

The Theory Of Tectonic Plates • Plate tectonics is a theory that the earths crust is made up of plateswhich moved apart over millions of years. • Over 225 million years ago, all the different continents formed one big continent known as Pangaea. • Pangaea slowly started to split apart around 200 million years ago. The oceans filled these gaps between the newly formed sub continents. • The land continues to move apart even today
