  1. Welcome to Hazcom Training Presented By: John McFarland & Jennifer Shaw

  2. All employees are required to be hazcom trained if there are chemicals in the building • Teachers are protected from being successfully sued by the sovereign immunity act. (TEA code 22.051) • However, care should be taken when doing any labs or demonstrations involving chemicals.

  3. What is HAZCOM??? • Hazcom is the hazardous communication act that gives employees the right to: • Access MSDS’s • Information on chemical exposure • Training on chemical hazards • Appropriate protective equipment • File complaints, assist inspectors, or testify against employers.

  4. Personal Protective Equipment • Get into 6 groups • Each group will be assigned a question from activity 2. • You will have a few minutes to find the answer and discuss with your group. • You need to choose one spokesperson for the group to explain your answer.

  5. Activity 2 Answers • TAC ss 295.144(a) states that eye protection is required where there is a reasonable probability of injury to the body that can be prevented by such protection. • False, standard eyeglasses do not afford the protection that safety goggles and other types of approved eye protection do.

  6. Activity 2 Answers Cont’d • According to TAC ss 295.145 (e)(2), flexible fitting goggles provide protection against fine dust, fumes, liquids, splashes, mists, and spray. • Immersion in 10% bleach solution for 10 minutes (phenolics or quaternary ammonia compounds) will fulfill the requirements of the law for disinfection.

  7. Activity 2 answers cont’d • TAC 295.148 requires disinfecting safety goggles or other protective eye wear before another person wears the same safety goggles. • NO, the school district is responsible for that!

  8. Important Goggle Facts! • Each teacher and student MUST wear industrial quality eye protective devises in appropriate situations and as determined by school district policy. • Safety glasses can NOT be worn when working with chemicals. • Eye glasses are NOT acceptable substitutes for approved safety goggles. • Safety goggles MUST meet ANSI standards Z2.1-1959. • See sub section 295.144 – General requirements

  9. Material Safety Data Sheets

  10. Requirements • MSDS for hazardous chemicals must be in workplace • employees must be able to interpret MSDS information • MSDS may be in printed form or available electronically • MSDS that is missing must be replaced within 30 days • hazardous chemicals may not be used if a MSDS is not available • MSDS shall be readily available for review by employees

  21. Activity 3 • In your same groups, look at activity three and answer the same numbered question you answered in activity 2. • You will have a few minutes to find the answer – use the label and MSDS sheet in the activity to answer the questions.

  22. Activity 3 Answers • F.W.number, UN number, storage code, date received, safety symbols, formula, & shelf life. • NFPA hazard rating, physical data, reactivity data, special precautions, TLV units, fire and explosion data, special protection data, spill or leak procedures. • The Flinn MSDS sheet is easier to read.

  23. Activity 3 – Answer, cont’d 4. Section 1 name – no number in the diamond, hazard rating – 0 • Section III, physical data – vapor density of the ammonia gas is 0.596 which is less than air. Air is the standard to compare density. • Section IV: Fire extinguisher can be either a water spray, carbon dioxide, dry chemical, or universal foam.

  24. MSDS Important Notes • Must accompany hazardous chemicals • Must conform to OSHA standards. • May be printed or electronic form, but must be accessible for review. • Must be replaced within 30 days if lost. • May not use chemicals without a current MSDS sheet available. • Vapor density refers to whether or not a gas will float or sink in the atmosphere. Air is 1, higher numbers will sink, lower numbers will rise.

  40. Activity 4 answers cont. • Neutralize with an alkaline material, then flush to sewer with copious amounts of water or contract a licensed disposal service. • Flash point for methyl alcohol is 52 degrees F. • Protect from light.

  43. Flammability Hazard Rating 3 1 0 OX Flammability Rating “3” • rapidly vaporizes at normal temperature and pressure • rapidly disperses into air • burns readily Includes: • very flammable gases • extremely volatile liquids • dust that readily burns • dust that explodes in air

  44. 3 1 0 OX Slight Health Hazard Rating • Health Rating “0”• exposure under fire conditions offer no hazard beyond that of combustible material

  45. 3 1 0 ox Minor Reactivity Hazard Rating Reactivity Rating “1”• materials must be preheated before ignition can occur• includes most ordinary combustible materials

  46. 3 1 0 OX Special Hazard Rating Special Hazard Rating “OX” • materials, on exposure under fire conditions, would offer no hazard beyond that of combustible material

  47. Activity 5 Answers • Will not burn, water reactive, cause injury or incapacitate a person on contact, capable of detonation with a strong initiating source. • B. may ignite under all temperatures. • Anything but water. • Covers most types of fires that you would have in the science classroom. • Chemical A would be the safest to use near an open flame.
