  5. Historical Data: Cell Phone Incidents Resulting in Out of School Suspensions 2005-2009: 2027 Incidents resulting in suspension

  6. A New Approach • Revised 2009-2010 Secondary Student Rights and Responsibility Handbook • Cell phones may be confiscated • Parent must come to school to retrieve cell phone

  7. Expulsion Data TOTAL EXPULSIONS (JULY ‘08 THROUGH MAY ‘09): MIDDLE SCHOOL: 59 HIGH SCHOOL: 75

  8. Revised Adjudication Guidelines High School Edition Middle School Edition Changes reflect additional interventions, including ISS, school within a school, and School Accountability Boards Financial Resources - Stimulus Funds

  10. Mandatory Components of Plans • All schools developed a plan – Clear Vision for behavioral expectations • Baseline data collected • Communicated to students on regular basis • Reward/Recognition component

  12. Five Middle Schools Selected All Agreed Suspending a student is ineffective in changing behavior

  13. Training funded with Title I, Part D – Neglected and Delinquent Stimulus Funds Additional funding expected through a grant submitted through the Collins Center, funded by the Florida Bar

  14. All faculty and staff received three hours of training – overview of Restorative Justice Model Each school’s leadership team received two full days of intensive training on how to conduct a school accountability board meeting.

  15. Community members were also invited to this training Schools were encouraged to begin using School Accountability Boards (when appropriate as a strategy)

  18. The SAB: Student – Parent – Principal – Guidance Counselors – Dean – Teacher - Intervention Specialist – Community Member

  19. People coming together to help the student understand: the impact of his/her actions on the entire community importance of “Repairing the Harm” what is necessary to help him/her make better choices in the future

  22. Outcomes… • Essay – Research three colleges • Attend anger management counseling • Five hours of restitution to the cafeteria – clean up after lunches • Deadline for completion – 30 days
