  1. Chapter 4 Managing Risk with the IPDE Process Presented by: Jay Feltz

  2. Unit 4 Summary • This lesson introduces students to three systems that will help them organize their driving skills. When mastered, the IPDE Process- when used with the Smith System and the Zone Control System- will help the driver to low risk and loww stress driving.

  3. Outcome • The hope for this lesson is that the driver will not focus on small items, but see “down the road” and identify hazards ahead. Once identified, they will then predict what might happen, and decide what actions they could take to avoid problems. And if the prediction they formulated happens, then execute the plan they decided on for that hazard.

  4. Pre-Assessment • The pre-assessment for this lesson will be a Think-Pair-Share activity to see what it is they are looking at and thinking about as they drive. • We would hope that their comments will give us descriptions of the different parts of the IPDE Process. • Jay Feltz - Pre-Assessment  Unit 4

  5. Using the Pre-Assessment • Once the pre-assessment is complete, we will use it to organize their thoughts into the IPDE Process. • This will give them a clear, concise thought pattern to visually search the road for hazards, and decide how to handle them in a safe manner.

  6. The IPDE Process (4.1) • Risks- 3 factors: driver, vehicle, and roadway. • IPDE- Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute • Smith System • Zone Control System

  7. Identify and Predict (4.2) • Identify- when, where, how, and what to look for. • Zone Control System- open versus closed • Visual Search Pattern • Predict- How might this hazard affect you? • Three components of prediction: knowledge, judgment, and experience.

  8. Decide and Execute (4.3) • Decide- find an action to take in case your prediction comes true. • Possible decisions include: changing speed, direction, or communication. • Separate the hazards. • Execute- carrying out decision to avoid conflict. • Important execution actions: control speed, steer, and communicate.

  9. Using the IPDE Process (4.4) • Using the IPDE Process helps you plan and execute maneuvers to reduce hazards. • IPDE takes practice to put into action, and takes time to learn how to identify clues and changing zones.
