  5. A Diverse Colony Dutch West India Company made lots of money in fur trade Struggle to attract Dutch settlers New Netherland opened its borders to European settlers, even free and enslaved Africans 1660’s 1/5 of New Netherland’s population was of African ancestry

  6. The English Take Over • New Netherland = ‘Dutch Wedge’ • King Charles sends Duke of York to drive out the Dutch • Duke of York takes it over without firing a single shot • Renames it New York • Gives piece to friend: New Jersey

The Quakers Settle PA • Penn’s “Holy Experiment” • Quakers of England: • Believed God’s inner light burned in everyone • No formal services; allowed any person to speak • Dressed plainly; pacifists who refused fight or join the military • Harassed by Anglicans and Puritans of England • William Penn recognizes its time to leave England in search of religious freedom • “Holy Experiment” • No land owning aristocracy; each settler give 50 acres of land and could vote • Capital- “City of Brotherly love” or Philadelphia
