  2. General Characteristicsof PlatyhelminthesThese organisms are dorso-ventrally flattened and bi-laterally symmetrical. Instead of having an inert skin or cuticle they have a living surface membrane, the tegument. Unlike the protozoa they have distinct functioning systems such as muscle and nervous systems. They have complex reproductive systems having both male and female reproductive organs, usually within the same organism (hermaphroditic).
