  4. Interview • Questions: • What facilities/amenities do you often visit/use in the estate? (E.g. Swimming pool, sports complex, community centre, shopping mall, etc) • When do you usually visit these places? Are they crowded? Do you see people of various races there? • Do the various residents interact with each other? Are there specific people they stay with while avoiding others? (e.g. same race, same age) • Do you interact with other residents, such as neighbours? How often do you usually socialize with other residents? Where do you usually interact with them? • What do you do with other residents? Only chit-chat, or take part in activities such as classes at the community centre?

  5. Interview • Interviewee 1- Teenager Interaction, but usually people of same raceDon't meet up and go out, but interact when meet with each otherMainly chit chatting, only hang out with classmates who live nearby

  6. Interview • Interviewee 2 - Graduate Usually Amk Hub, Yio Chu Kang Stadium & Swimming ComplexSchool Holidays, Sometimes (Usually during peak hours), quite a number of       races Depends on environment, usually feel outcast (eg with specific races),No, but only friends that live in amk, not neighboursR2: When jogging, will interact and socialize with residents

  7. Interview • Interviewee 3 – Lady in late 40s usually amk hub (3-4 times a week)After lunch time ( to avoid lunchtime traffic )Normally everyone talks to everyone, but some indians are introvertedSocialize with neighbours, when go market etcOnly chit chatting, because working class

  8. Conclusions • AMK Hub most visited, lack of patronage from residents in community centres • High-resident activity outside of home • High resident to resident interaction, BUT race-based • Indians consciously reserved, introverted , lacking interaction with society( or ostracized?)

  9. Conclusions • PAP puts citizens of different racial and religious background within an estate to ensure cross-racial interaction in daily neighbour to neighbour interactions • Government's claims that the facilities within the estate aid social cohesion are reliable on a resident to resident level, but has not ensured high levels of interaction between races. Also, facilities with high expectancy of patronage are left untouched by residents (community centres, supermarket, etc. ) whereas places like AMK Hub are crowded most of the time. • Racial stigma still present, more has to be done to ensure greater social cohesion.
