Important Dates and Information • February 25th to – Parent information night course planning evening…starts at 6:30pm. • February 28thth – March 5th- Parent and student Connect Open to SELECT COURSES • Once YOU choose on Student Connect your parents have to approve your pick • Student Connect – User ID = Student Number and Password = month/ day/ year • Course planning evening – February 25th for your parents @ 6:30pm

  10. UBC Entrance is based on the following courses: UBC ASKS FOR AT LEAST 70% HIGHER IN ENGLISH 11 or 12 FOUNDATIONS OF MATH 12 is the minimum for entrance. ARTS: English 12 and 3 other academically approved courses SCIENCE: English 12, Pre Calc.12,Physics 11, Chemistry 11, with at least one from Bi12, Ch12, Geo12, or Ph12 ENGINEERING: English 12, Ch11 & Ch12, Ma12 P, Ph11& Ph12 COMMERCE: English 12, Math 12 & 2 other approved courses

Humanities 10 Course Content: In Humanities 10 students will earn credit for both Social Studies 10 and English 10 by delving into issues that thematically connect literature, history and current events. Although Humanities 10 is available to all grade 10 students, this course is designed to appeal to students who are passionate about the humanities and interested in pursuing collaborative critical inquiry. Successful Humanities 10 students should be motivated, self-regulated and responsible when it comes to their learning. It is expected that students who choose to take Humanities 10 will be committed and dedicated to participating and doing their best work in all aspects of the class. Humanities 10 will be double-blocked and taught in a team approach with a clear focus on developing critical thinking and analytical writing. The concepts of marginalization and identity serve as the anchors of this course.

Changes to the Math Curriculum • Three Pathways • Apprenticeship and Workplace Mathematics – designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into the majority of trades and for direct entry into the work force. NO UNIVERSITY WILL TAKE THIS MATH FOR ENTRANCE!! • Foundations of Mathematics – designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for post-secondary studies in programs that do not require the study of theoretical calculus. • Pre-calculus - designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs that require the study of theoretical calculus. NEEDED FOR ALL UNIVERSITY SCIENCE PROGRAMS

  25. Language Challenge Exams • for those students with a background in Mandarin, Spanish, Japanese, Punjabi, Korean, German • they may apply to write a challenge exam to earn language 11 and 12 credits. • Applications come out in October of next year. Exam is end of January.

  26. Summer School Remedial • THERE WILL BE NO SUMMER SCHOOL REMEDIAL THIS YEAR Full-Credit • 3 hour class • 6 weeks • English 10, Socials 10, Science 10, Math 10, Planning 10 • Traditional and blended (some online work) options

Online Courses • Delta’s online school is called Delta Access – check website for courseavailability • Spring / Summer session in all courses currently offered (including Planning 10) • Online courses also available through Vancouver (VLN), Surrey (Surrey Connect), Fraser Valley (FVDES) EBUS – Vanderhoof BC

External Credits • Students may earn credits toward graduation through training programs outside of school: • Dance (Royal Academy of Dance) • Music (Royal Conservatory of Music) • Sports (Provincial or National team level) • Lifesaving (Bronze Cross, NLS, Instructor) • Cadets (National Defense Cadet Certification) • Coaching (Level 1-2, First Aid, 75-150 hours) • Official (Theory, evaluation, 75-125 hours) • Driver Ed. (ICBC accredited program) • First Aid (WCB level II and III) *students are asked to submit documentation as proof of program completion

Tech Stretch • FOR GRADE 9’s and 10’s • Occurs October to May – total of five ½ days • TO SIGN UP PLEASE GO TO DISTRICT WEBSITE AND PRINT OFF APPLICATION FORM • OPEN HOUSES: • Feb. 13 @ Seaquam Secondary 6:30pm • March 5 – Women in Trades Evening – Seaquam Secondary @ 6:30pm • April 24 – Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair @ Sungod Arena 9:00am

  31. Army Cadet Academy • Seaquam Secondary Gr 8 – 9 Males and Females • This academy operates in partnership with the Dept. of Nat’l Defence. This program begins at the Red Star training level, however, Green Star level will be accommodated. Both programs will be enhanced with optional training activities and outdoor pursuits such as: abseil, archery, canoeing, orienteering, ropes courses, Duke of Edinburgh, and citizenship tours. Additional opportunities to participate in free summer camp training courses. • (2 block program every other afternoon)

  32. International Baccalaureate • Starts in Grade 11 (Certificate or Diploma) • Two recommendations: • DO math 11 before you go into IB diploma program • If you would like to do a Dogwood and an IB Diploma you will need to take SS11
