  1. Side airbag OOP study Side airbag TWG Meeting on October 25. 2001 Honda R&D

  2. Outline • Airbag philosophy and OOP test status. • OOP test procedure study.

  3. Airbag philosophy and OOP test status Side Effect Occupant Protection Balance Frontal airbag system Side airbag system • Top mount airbag • De-power inflator • Folding for quick deployment • Material • Shape • Seat mount airbag • De-power inflator • Folding for a performance to go into narrow space • Seat tear line structure for de-power inflator Multi stage inflator Occupant Posture Detecting System Crash severity i-SRS i-side airbag system

  4. Airbag philosophy and OOP test status • Support Side airbag TWG orientation(contribution). • Challenging High-performance airbag system research and development. • Applying side airbag system with OPDS. • Possibility be met TWG OOP recommendation. (Canadian MOU)

  5. 3.3.2.1 3.3.2.2 3.3.2.3 3.3.2.4 3.3.2.5 3.3.2.6 3.3.2.7 OOP test procedure study 3.3.2 Test for seat-mounted system

  6. A B C D OOP test procedure study Injury severity HY3 C3Y on Booster seat 3.3.2.1 position is most important in our airbag system. A (TWG3.2.2.1)<B<C<D Studied using prototype side airbags based on NHTSA's proposal. a) Dummy setting problems b) Neck injury mechanism

  7. OOP test procedure study To study injury variation of relative location between A/B module and C3Y Dummy head. Case 1. Airbag module height position in seat Case 2. Dummy height position along the seat surface

  8. B B 110mm A 120mm OOP test procedure study Case 1. Airbag module height position in seat A Position A=Reference to TWG procedure Dummy head contacts seat surface Position B=Move module 120mm upward Reference to TWG procedure Head behind clearance increases 0(A) to 110mm(B)

  9. Comparison the injury criteria of 2 positions Neck Tension Nij A B A B OOP test procedure study Case 1. Airbag module height position in seat A B Contact 110mm

  10. OOP test procedure study Case 2. Dummy height position with head contacting the seat surface 50mm 0 50mm

  11. Comparison injury criteria of 3 positions Nij Neck Tension The phenomenon showed that the injury criteria reduced in the case of air bag struck dummy shoulder area.( See.C) A C D A C D A C D 50mm Down Original position 50mm Up OOP test procedure study

  12. OOP test procedure study Test results • Test result deviations related to the setting procedure are found. • Distance between head and airbag module is affected by airbag module height within the seat. • Dummy (C3Y) neck injury criteria is very sensitive to distance between airbag module and head.
