Go Back Introduction to Tintern Abbey Six miles North of Chepstow alongside some of the River Wye’s most spectacular stretches, Tintern Abbey has inspired writers and painters for over two hundred years, ever since the Reverend William Gilpin published a book in 1782 telling of the picturesque qualities of the abbey and it’s valley. On a quiet day, the sight of the roofless ruins can be hugely uplifting.
