First assessments in 2009 – highlight problem with water quality Overgrazing and forest degradation/deforestation were pointed to have the main impact on water resources 2010 fundraising – ReSource Award 2011 May-July 2011 – scientific assessments (pastures, forests, landslides) meetings with stakeholders, discussions about the PES contract Background of the project
Researches 2009 – General pilot site assessment: General overview of the area, presentation of local economical and ecological characteristics, first 2011 – Researches on: Capacity of ecosystems to provide services Pasture use, pasture degradation and impact on water Forest use, degradation and impact on water Landslides, impact on water and possible management Activities achieved • Discussions with stakeholders • 2010 – Workshop in Almaty on PES and recommendations from the United States Forestry Service • 2011 – Different individual or group meetings with local stakeholders ; meeting with the Governor of the Oblast
Working mostly on pastures and forests degradation; Determining the Hydrological Services they provide thanks to the input of an international expert for very accurate scientific researches; Making recomendations for an improvment of the Hydrologival Services provision; Having a brief look to the landslides but without planning special activities or researches for them; Creating a PES system involving the water and pasture users association, and the Forestry Unit. Initial project planning
Discussions with locals and first scientific researches showed that: Pastures are indeed degraded, but the impact of this degradation on water was probably overestimated; The impact on landslides is probably important than what we thought. A plan is a plan… • Modification of the plan: • Cancellation of the trip for international expert; • Reallocation of funds to landslides assessment and possibly for water quality tests; • Integration of tourists and mushroom collecters in the PES mechanism
Pastures: 7-days fieldtrip to research about degradation and to make recommendations for a more sustainable use of pastures; Forests: 2-days fieldtrip to identify the areas degraded, the type and reasons of the degradation and to make recommendatons for a better protection of the forest; Landslides: 4-days field trip to analyze their possible impact on water resources. Field trip: objectives and schedule • Recommendations are the main scientific input for discussions in this workshop, they will be the base of the working group sessions.
Pastures: Places degraded; Nature and reasons of the degradation; Potential impact on water resources; Mapping; Technical and institutional recommendations to improve the situation; Inclusion of these recommendations in the PES Scheme; Proposition for a Monitoring and Evaluation plan. Researches conducted (1) • Forest: • Places degraded; • Places where the regeneration is limited; • Nature and reason of the degradations (grazing, illegal logging); • Proposition for a Monitoring and Evaluation plan; • Inclusion of these recommendations in the PES Scheme;
Researches conducted (2) • Landsildes: • Identification of the different landslides in the watershed; • Granulometric and geologic analysis of the ground; • Technical recommendations for decreasing their impact on water quality; • Proposition for a Monitoring and Evaluation plan; • Inclusion of these recommendations in the PES Scheme;
