  9. Think outside the box: Where else can we find vernacular architecture? • Humans are just one type of animal! • Birds, chimps, termites, ants, spiders, bees, mice, beavers, and fish are just a few examples of “animal architectects!”

  13. The Challenge! • Create a sculpture symbolizing a shelter structure. Use objects, detritus, and natural materials from your everyday life • The technique you’ll be using is assemblage: a sculptural technique of organizing or composing into a unified whole a group of unrelated and often fragmentary or discarded objects. • I will be providing cardboard as one of the elements you can choose to use

Vernacular architecture tends to evolve over time to reflect the environmental, cultural, technological, and historical context in which it exists (wiki) • Assemblage: an artistic process consisting of making 3d or 2d artistic compositions by putting together found objects (wiki) • Sculpture: the branch of visual arts that operates in three dimensions
