  1. The Shavuot By Steven Wojtan, Chris Greene, Corey Mahoney, Nick the Cool Perna

  2. Origin of the Shavuot • Shavuot is the combination of 2 significant religious observances • Origins in an ancient grain harvest festival (ritual for one of 3 pilgrimage festivals of ancient Israel, where Israelite men would appear before God in Jerusalem and had to bring offerings of their harvests first fruit. • Giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai (a covenant between Israel and God and the assumption of Devine Law) CM

  3. Origin of the Shavuot • Shavuot means weeks • Marks the completion of the 7 weeks between Passover and Shavuot • Shavuot is the commemoration of the beginning of the Israelites spiritual life as a people. CM

  4. Origin of the Shavuot • Celebrated 7 weeks after Pesch (Passover) • Shavout takes place 50 days after Seder • Tradition to eat milk and cheese in celebration of Shavuot CM

  5. Purpose of the Shavuot • A celebration of the giving of the Torah on mount Sinai • Originally celebrated the first harvest of the season SW

  6. Purpose of the Shavuot • Celebrated by: • Studying the Torah all night long • Festive Meals • Not doing work SW

  7. Shavuot in Scripture • Shavuot is the only Jewish festival not given an exact date in the bible • It is referred to as the festival of weeks in scripture • Each year the book of Ruth is read on Shavuot as it’s stories pertain to a harvest CG

  8. Shavuot in Scripture • Exodus 34:22 states “And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, even of the first-fruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the turn of the year” • In this passage God calls the Israelites to celebrate the beginning of harvest season CG

  9. Shavuot in Scripture • God also asks for the feast of weeks to be celebrated in Deuteronomy 16:10 • Numbers 28:16 states that fruits should be dedicated to the Lord at the beginning of harvest season CG

  10. Shavuot in Scripture • Shavuot has come to celebrate the giving of the 10 commandments • Exodus 20:1-17 list the Ten Commandments • In total, 613 commandments were given CG

  11. Shavuot in Scripture • Shavuot also celebrates the giving of the Torah • The Torah is the first five books of the bible • It is traditional to study the Torah on the day of Shavuot CG

  12. Shavuot in Scripture • The Talmud refers to Shavuot as “Pentecost” because it occurs 50 days after Passover • It also refers to Shavuot as “Atzeret” which means “holding back” • Jews were forbidden from working on Shavuot CG

  13. Relationship to Christian Liturgical Practices • Shavuot is similar to Pentecost in that as Moses started a Jewish nation, Pentecost started a Christian Nation • On Shavuot no work is permitted, just like on the Sabbath or Sunday for the Christians • As the Ten Commandments were given to the Jews this day, they were also given to Christians on this day NP

  14. Relationship to Christian Liturgical Practices • Shavuot relates to the sacrament of Reconciliation in that it freed the Hebrews from Idolatry • Reconciliation is like being freed from Idolatry because it stops us from worshipping the false god of sin NP

  15. Relationship to Christian Liturgical Practices • Shavuot can also relate to the sacrament of the Eucharist because when celebrating Shavuot there is a great feast, just like Communion • The Eucharist also relates to Shavuot because on Shavuot bread is presented to the temple and bread is the substance which is turned into the body of Christ NP

  16. Relationship to Christian Liturgical Practices • The sacrament of the Eucharist is similar to Shavuot because it is like the milk and honey in the promised land, the Eucharist gets us to the promised land NP
