  1. Eighth Grade Science Mrs.Nelson

  2. EQ: How can I design and conduct an experiment to demonstrate Newtons 1st and 3rd laws? STARTER9/22 through 9/26 • Summarize Newton’s laws in your own terms. • Select one of the three laws and record two examples from your daily life that demonstrate that particular law. • Find and have ready your work from the Phet simulations from last class period. • 8.PS2: Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions • 3) Create a demonstration of an object in motion and describe the position, force, and direction of the object. • 4) Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object. • 5) Evaluate and interpret that for every force exerted on an object there is an equal force exerted in the opposite direction.

  3. Comic Strip Example

  4. Newton’s Laws

  5. Phet Simulations Forces and Motion • Go to Google • Type in your search bar the above topic- exactly as shown • Select the first search result • You should see the screen on the right. • For the simulations Net Force, Motion, and Friction complete the following: • Set up at least 5 scenarios • Predict the outcome • Run the scenario • Document outcome • For the simulations Net Force, Motion, and Friction complete the following: • Set up at least 5 scenarios • Predict the outcome • Run the scenario • Document outcome • Be sure to turn sound off and click to show all options in the boxes.

  6. STOP and THINK • 1. Analyze the inertia of an object of smaller or greater mass. Is inertia the same for all objects? Why or why not? • 2. Use the following formula to solve the problems: • Acceleration=net force/mass • Mass of 15 kg with 45N of force • What if the force changed to 25N? • What if the mass changed to 70kg? 3. Apply the third law of motion to explain how rockets can maneuver in space.

  7. Gallery Walk • In AB pairs rotate around the room and analyze each graph of acceleration. • Sketch each graph on your page. • Draw a conclusion about the acceleration of the object based on the position of the line. Record your ideas. • Flip the cover up to reveal the explanation. Were your conclusions accurate? Why or why not? If not, explain your mistake in interpreting the graph.

  8. Newton’s Laws 1 and 3 investigations • Table groups select a bag of materials. • Utilize the materials to design and then conduct and experiment to demonstrate Newton’s 1st or 3rd law. Record all procedural steps, data, and analysis. • You may use the same materials to carry out the same process for the other law or you may return materials and select another bag. • Each individual will record all activity in formation on their own paper to tun in. 1stLaw information should be on the front of the page clearly labeled and the 3rd law on the back. • Group members: • Leader • Materials • Timekeeper • Investigator

  9. SUMMARY- on post it note Record the ONE main concern/question you still have regarding Newton’s Laws. Then record one strategy you can use to help you with this concern/question between now and the quiz. Post it goes on door window on your way out.

  10. Socrative Check (for assessment points) • 1. Open up your computer • 2. Go to Socrative Student • 3. Use this code__________ • When finished- close Socrative, go to Study Island and complete the remediation assignment. • Come see me when you have earned your blue ribbon.
