Sustaining Program Impact Program Directors Meeting November 16, 2006

This session will explore different sustainability strategies to ensure lasting impact and preserve organizational capacity. Panelists will share case studies and discuss tools for planning and achieving sustained success. Participants are encouraged to provide feedback and suggestions for RWJF to promote sustained impact.

  2. RWJF’s Focus • In 2003: new strategic impact framework AND • Time-limited grantmaking • Emphasis on sustaining impact through the transition from RWJF funding • A new focus on sustainability throughout the lifecycle of programs and projects

  3. “By acknowledging at the beginning through the impact framework that we are concerned with the entire cycle, we will change the emphasis we put on the beginning, the middle and the transition to sustainability.” Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, Advances

  4. Definitions Effective transitions = planning for the end of successful projects and programs and for appropriate dissemination or sustainability strategies. Balance: time-limited grants and lasting impacts. Sustainability = always sustaining some enduring impact or legacy; sometimes sustaining programs, organizations and/or identifying new funds and homes for major efforts.

  5. Aims • Achieve highest social returns and impacts • Preserve leadership, organizational capacity, momentum in a new field

  6. RWJF’s Sustainability Tools • Tools for different stages and program type (see handout) • One size does not fit all • Be strategic: What is the wisest use of resources to create a positive legacy? • Prioritize: Choose tools based on what is most important to disseminate or sustain
