  4. Male Pattern Baldness • More common in men • Affects 35 million men in the U.S. 1 • Partial or complete baldness

  5. Female Pattern Baldness • Hair becomes thinner all over • Hairline does not receive • Rarely leads to complete baldness 3

  6. Related Diseases • Coronary Heart disease • Diabetes • Enlargement of the prostate • High Blood Pressure • Prostate Cancer • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Women) 1

  7. Cause of Androgenic Alopecia • Androgen called dihydrotestosterone2 • Responsible for sexual development • Androgens regulate hair growth • Increased levels of androgens = short cycle of hair growth 1

  8. The AR Gene • Provides instructions for making a protein 2 • This protein is called an androgen receptor • Variations in the AR gene lead to increased activity of androgen receptors 1

  9. Cure • The only thing that helps is Minoxidil • It lengthens the anagen phase • Increases blood in the hair follicle

  10. Why It Should Be Studied • It should be studied so we can find the ultimate cure • We should find a way to manipulate the AR gene • If we could solve this problem, we could help millions
