  2. AKNOWLDGEMENT The Government and the people of Afghanistan are indebted to the multi-faceted support of the international community particularly the USAID. Without this generous support, it would have been impossible to transform a defunct and disabled education system of 2002 to a progressive and inclusive system that delivers education to millions of Afghan children across the country.

  3. Where we were in 2001

Comparison between 2001 and 2012 2001 2012 • Less then 1 million students in schools; • Only 20,000 teachers, almost all male; • Only 4 teachers training colleges and only 400 students enrolled; • Only 3,400 semi functional schools ; • No scholarships at all for Afghan students; • Around 9.3 million students in school out of which 40% are female; • Currently 198,755 teachers (31% female); • 42 Teachers Training colleges (10 fold increase); • 15,906 full functional schools ; • 3,351 scholarships and altogether around 10,000 Afghan students studying abroad currently .

Some other achievements to date • Over 5,700 school facilities constructed with Donors support; • 180 District Teacher Training Centers (DTTCs) established to address shortage of qualified teachers in remote parts of the country. • Demand for Education is created; • Behavior and attitude of the community has changed, community ownership has increased and schools are more safer; • For the first time private sector invested in education, 750 private schools; • 80,000 students in 210 TVET schools (a 13 fold increase); • Every year on average, 250,000 adults (62% female) attended nine-month literacy courses; • 550 (out of 1000) schools, closed-down by insurgencies, reopened benefitting over 200,000 students and 3,000 teachers;
