Some like collecting British India notes while many others specialise in Republic India notes. • Today, let’s take a look at the types of Indian bank notes that were issued by the East India Company even before British India notes were officially introduced.
Bank of Bengal issued rare bank notes of odd denominations such as 4 Rupees, 8 Rupees, 16 Rupees, 250 Rupees, 25 Rupees, 5000 Rupees etc. Collectors from all over the country dream of having these old bank notes of India in their collection. • The earliest issues featured designs only on one side. They were followed by Commerce notes depicting an allegorical female figure personifying commerce and eventually the Britannia Series was introduced.
Bank of Bombay issued early Indian bank notes of denominations such as 100 Rupees, 1000 rupees, 5000 Rupees, 5 Rupees etc. from 1850 to 1860. • The designs of notes issued by Bank of Bombay after 1860 were much better in quality when compared to the designs featured on other old currency bank notes. The Uniface notes depicted an image of the Town Hall of Bombay.
The Madras Bank was the first bank of India that was established in the year 1682. The Bank of Madras was established in 1843 by merging three banks including the Madras Bank. • Madras Presidency issued the smallest number of early bank notes of India. These Indian presidency banknotes depicted a vignette of the Governor of Madras, Sir Thomas Munroe.
