High-resolution idealized simulations of TC genesis

High-resolution idealized simulations of TC genesis. surface vortex formation. Azimuthally averaged wind fields show contraction and intensification of the mid-level vortex in the 24 hours before genesis. These changes should be visible to NIS radar – even if individual VHTs are not.

  1. High-resolution idealized simulations of TC genesis surface vortex formation Azimuthally averaged wind fields show contraction and intensification of the mid-level vortex in the 24 hours before genesis These changes should be visible to NIS radar – even if individual VHTs are not

  2. How can we evaluate or quantify the changes leading to genesis? One way may be through energy efficiency analyses of the wind field: 6 hours before genesis 24 hours before genesis Kinetic energy efficiency (KEE) measures the fraction of latent heat energy released in convection that is converted into kinetic energy of the vortex wind field. This type of analysis may provide additional predictive power into genesis and rapid intensification beyond what a forecast model can provide
