  1. Ageing of single crystalline laser deposited René N4 Nickel superalloy Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa, Av. Rovisco Pais, 1049 - 001 Lisboa, Portugal José Cardoso, Amélia Almeida, Rui Vilar Jornadas do CeFEMA 2019

  2. Tableofcontents • Introduction • Laser metal deposition • Hightemperaturesuperalloysmicrostructure • Results • Microstructureformationandfurtherwork Jornadas do CeFEMA 2019

  3. Introduction Airplane turbine engine schematic [1]. Advances in materials engineering have been crucial to the development of modern airplanes by enabling higher operating temperatures and longer service lives of the jet engines Thegreatestchallengeisthe hot sectionofgas turbine engines [1] Electrical Parts (2019). 4. Introduction • Ni-basedsuperalloys: • Withstand temperatures as high as 90% of their melting point (~1300 ºC) • Outstanding thermal fatigue and creep resistance when single crystalline • Thedrawbackof single crystallinepartsisthedifficulty in repairingthemwhilemaintainingthesamemicrostructure • Laser metal deposition: • Highly localized • Low quantity of material required • By controlling solidification, epitaxial dendritic single • crystal deposits can be produced Laser metal deposition setup [2]. 5. Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) • Processingparameters: • Laser power • Scanning speed • Powderfeed rate • Theprocessingparameters, andthustheenergytransfered to thesubstrate, define theshapeofthemeltpool • Theshapeofthemelt pool determines thegrowthvelocityofthe dendrites Laser metal deposition and melt pool shape schematic [3]. 6. Hightemperaturesuperalloysmicrostructure - γ/γ’ microstructure Cuboidal γ’ Ni3Al / Ni3Ti precipitates distributed homogenously in a γ phase matrix Dislocations/ precipitatesinteraction Strengthening Cuboidal γ’ Ni3Al phase distributed in γ phase matrix for a first generation superalloy[4]. 7. Laser metal depositionof René N4 on N5 • Depositionon a <100> plane ofthe sample • Parameters: • Laser beampower: 500 W • Powderfeed rate: 5.14 g min-1 • Scanning speed: 4 mm s-1 • Spot diameter: 3 mm EBSD analysis of five consecutive René N4 tracks on René N5 substrate. Five consecutive René N4 layers on René N5 substrate. Jornadas do CeFEMA 2019

  8. As-deposited René N4 superalloymicrostructure Dendritic microstructure with orientation [001] γ/γ’ eutectic The dendrites are composedof (γ) solid solution with interdendritic γ/γ’ eutecticandcarbides (γ) [001] • In order to obtain the γ/γ’ microstructure a post-deposition heat treatment is required. This heat treatment may comprise two steps: • Solution heat treatment in order to homogenize the distribution of the elements across the part (due to dendritic growth there is segregation) • Ageing to precipitate the γ’ phase with a suitable shape and size Carbides Microstructure of the as-deposited track Jornadas do CeFEMA 2019

  9. Ageing for 2 h at 1050 ºCwithsolutiontreatmentat 1265 ºC for 1 h • Highuniformityandorientationwith a higheramountofTCP phaseplates Carbides TCP plates 1 h at 1265 ºC other area 1 h at 1265 ºC Jornadas do CeFEMA 2019

  10. Microstructureformationandimpactonproperties René N4 compositionandsolid/liquidpartitioncoefficients (gatheredfromliterature) Allγ’ formingelements (Al, Ti and Ta) segregate to theliquid, leading to higher volume fraction in theinterdentriticregions Formationofcarbides Maytranformintosecondarycarbides C, Nb, Ta, Ti segregate to interdendriticregions Formationofγ’ envelope, degradationofmechanicalproperties Inhibitgrainboundaryslidingduringhightemperaturecreep Jornadas do CeFEMA 2019

  11. Microstructureformationandimpactonproperties • Effectof TCP phaseson material properties: • Depletionofrefractoryelementsfromtheγsolidsolutionphase • Crack initiation zones 15 ºC TTT diagram for TCP phases [5] [5] Matuszewsky, K. 12. Conclusionsandfurtherwork • Epitaxyisattainableoversingle crystallineareasofthesubstrate • A two-step heattreatmentisrequired to obtain a suitablemicrostructure, for example: • Solutionheattreatmentat 1265 ºC for 1 h • Precipitation step at 1050 ºC for 2 h • Optimizationoftheheattreatmentisstillnecessary in order to supresstheformationoftheTCP phaseplates • Increasesolutionheattreatmenttemperature • A detailedstudyofthetransformationskineticsisbeingperformed Jornadas do CeFEMA 2019
