  5. Lessons Learnt from the HEA sector • There is no substitute for senior buy in really helpful to have the SU involved n.b. Green academy can help encourage students to get involved with SU • The more you know the less you release you know • You can make change happen when there is mammoth change happening around you • Learning what’s already there so you can publicise/build on it learning what’s already there so you can publicise/build on it • Research data helps to encourage – high % of students and employers are interested in sustainable education • You can never publicise enough! Don’t assume people hear your message, use different kinds of messages/publicity media. If they get bored of hearing it, they haven’t heard it • Time and money • Staff/students may not be interested (so communications is key) • New population of n.b. some carry wins do not necessarily get it the people who challenge and ask questions may be the most supportive in the end • Usual suspects may end up involved – commination's of different messages can help/senior support can help/back onto something already happening • Demand by success can be a barrier – pressure to have a quick win • Inter disciplinary working – there can be barriers to this yet it is key to ESD • Inter disciplinary research can be more prevalent than inter disciplinary teaching • Encourage collaboration and activity (has kick started activity) • Can HEA support is further beyond GA long term education • GA banner gives its credence – you can treat it’s and publicise it’s a prestigious award • Have help out GA badge. If it was mandated it would be sustainable i.e. to keep your GA status you have to stay networked /1 annual meeting - helps pass the baton to others • Important that the academy itself supports it! • Communication is key and needs to continue above and beyond GA both internally and externally cooperating competition and collaboration • Clear guidance on staged change would be useful
